Are Champions Born or Are They Made?
At just three days old, Penny Chenery looked at the colt, Secretariat and said, “he’s too pretty to be a good horse,” but that was just the beginning of a connection between the two, horse and owner, who together, would eventually win the Triple Crown in 1973, and save her father’s horse breeding business and farm.
Mrs. Penny Chenery, a housewife and homemaker, living with her husband and children in Boulder, CO, was also a “daddy’s girl.” After her mother died of sudden death and her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease, Penny came back home to run (and save) the family farm and horse breeding operation.
It was Penny’s decision to breed sire, Bold Ruler to dam, Something Royal and in 1970, Secretariat was born. The rest is history!
It will be Derby Day on September 12th or September 17th, when you have the opportunity to meet Penny Chenery and learn her remarkable story, played in first person by (Oregon Community Theatre’s actress, director and producer) Lisa Gordon who also owns five of her own thoroughbred horses.
Tickets to the public will go on sale June 1st but we are giving OJHS members an opportunity to reserve their seats now because we know this will be a sell out very quickly.
Tables for 4 are available for $112 and individual ticket prices are $28 per person.

FALL APPLE BUTTER STIR
Join the OJHS sponsored, COMMUNITY WIDE EVENT!
It’s the FALL APPLE BUTTER STIR!
We NEED VOLUNTEERS to HELP: Peel, Stir and Can!
Are you someone who LOVES to show off your skill with a paring knife or apple peeler? Do you like good conversation? Enjoy lots of laughs, and the smell of the fresh outdoors from the inside of a warm and cozy barn? Do you like to eat yummy snacks while working?
If you can answer “YES” to ANY of the above… the APPLE BUTTER STIR COMMITTEE could use your help!
SATURDAY, October 5th, from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM we will be peeling 9 bushels of apples. Many hands make light work and we have the system down pat so it goes pretty fast.
SUNDAY, October 6th, the stirring begins at 8:00 AM, so if you are available for a short time, come out and give it a whirl!
We use wooden paddles over an open flame. We take turns stirring the pot (no pun intended), until approximately 3:00 PM, when the apple butter will be READY for canning!
Approximately 250 jars of Apple Butter will be canned that day.
*All volunteers receive a free pint sized jar to take home and enjoy!
The Apple Butter Stir takes place at MAUMEE BAY BED and BREAKFAST, 9855 Jerusalem Road (State Route 2) Curtice, Ohio.
Apple Butter is SOLD in the gift shop at Brandville Museum; at Bench Farms on St. Rt 2; and at Spragues Farm Market.
All proceeds from the sale of OJHS Apple Butter goes towards scholarships at the high school level. In 2023, we presented a $500 scholarship to a deserving high school student who was also a volunteer for our Children’s History Camp!
